Your car has been trying to talk to you. Maybe it started as a small squeak you could ignore, or a thump that only shows up on cold mornings. Whatever it is, noises are usually your vehicle's way of saying something has changed and deserves a look. The good news is that most common car sounds point to well-known causes. Here is a plain-English guide to some of the noises we hear about most often. ## Squealing or Grinding When You Brake This one gets people's attention fast, and for good reason. A high-pitched squeal when you press the brake pedal is often the wear indicator on your brake pads doing exactly what it is designed to do: signal that the pads are getting thin and need to be replaced soon. If the sound has moved from a squeal to a grinding or scraping noise, that usually means the pads have worn down further and metal is contacting metal. At that point, it is worth getting the brakes inspected without much delay. Brakes are one of those things you really do not want to put off. ## Clunking, Knocking, or Thumping A rhythmic thump that speeds up as you drive faster can point to a tire issue, like a flat spot, an out-of-balance wheel, or a failing wheel bearing. A clunk when you hit a bump or turn a corner is often related to the suspension, such as a worn ball joint, tie rod, or strut mount. A knocking sound from under the hood, especially when the engine is running, is something to take seriously. It can mean the engine is low on oil, or that internal parts are wearing in a way that needs attention. ## Rattles, Hisses, and Other Sounds Here are a few other noises worth knowing: - **Rattling under the car**: Often a heat shield or exhaust component that has come loose. - **Hissing from the engine bay**: Could be a coolant or vacuum leak, or a belt that is slipping. - **Clicking when you turn**: On front-wheel-drive cars, this is a classic sign of a worn CV axle joint. - **Squeaking from inside the cabin**: Usually a trim piece or seatbelt component, but worth checking. ## When to Come See Us Most noises are not emergencies, but some are. If you hear something new along with a warning light on your dashboard, a pull to one side, or vibration in the steering wheel, that combination is worth a prompt visit. Even if the noise seems minor, it is always fine to stop by and have us take a listen. Sometimes it is something simple. Either way, knowing what is going on gives you peace of mind and helps you make an informed decision rather than guessing. At Brooks Motor Works, we are happy to take a look and give you a straight answer about what we find. No pressure, no confusing jargon. Just an honest explanation of what your car needs (and what it does not). If you are hearing something that has you wondering, feel free to give us a call or drop in. We are right here in Vienna and always glad to help.
