Fall is one of the best times of year in Northern Virginia. The leaves change, the temperatures drop, and the humidity finally eases up. But that shift in weather puts real stress on your car, and a little prep now can save you a lot of trouble once winter arrives. Here are the things worth paying attention to before the cold really sets in. ## Check Your Battery First Cold weather is hard on car batteries. If yours is a few years old or has been a little sluggish on startup, fall is the right time to have it tested. A battery that barely gets you going on a mild October morning may leave you stranded when temperatures drop in December or January. Getting a battery test is quick and usually takes just a few minutes. If the battery is on its way out, replacing it before winter is a lot more convenient than dealing with a no-start situation on a cold morning. ## Tires, Brakes, and Fluids These three things matter all year long, but fall is a good time to give them a fresh look. **Tires:** Check your tire pressure when the weather cools down. Air contracts in colder temperatures, so your tires can lose pressure without any damage or leak. Properly inflated tires handle better on wet leaves and slick roads. **Brakes:** If you have heard any squealing or grinding lately, or if your car pulls to one side when you stop, get that looked at before road conditions get worse. **Fluids:** Coolant (sometimes called antifreeze) is especially important as temperatures drop. You also want to make sure your windshield washer fluid is rated for cold weather, since plain water will freeze in the reservoir. A quick fall checklist: - Tire pressure and tread depth - Brake pads and rotors - Coolant level and condition - Cold-weather windshield washer fluid - Wiper blades ## Don't Forget Your Lights and Wipers The days get shorter fast in fall, and you end up driving in the dark more often. Take a few minutes to walk around your car and make sure all your lights are working, including headlights, tail lights, and turn signals. Replace any bulbs that are out. Wiper blades are easy to overlook, but a streaky wiper on a rainy November night is genuinely frustrating. If your blades are leaving smears or chattering across the windshield, swapping them out is a small job that makes a real difference. ## A Little Prep Goes a Long Way You don't have to do everything at once. Even taking care of one or two items on this list puts you in a better spot than ignoring the season entirely. Fall maintenance is really about keeping small issues from turning into bigger ones once the weather turns cold. If you have any questions about your car's readiness for the colder months, feel free to stop by or give us a call. We're right here in Vienna and happy to take a look.
